Let’s Talk About Period Sex: Intimate Or Uncomfortable?

Usually when I ask people about period sex, I get negative reactions or weird stares, like “sis, you’re actually having sex on your period?”, Yes girl, I am. And it feels g-r-e-a-t. Period sex is healthy, and the orgasms you get from it can give you relief from cramps. Its true that it can be a really messy affair, but sex in general is messy! The key to having period sex is to just be comfortable, I advise not to do it with just anyone, but rather with someone you’re very intimate with, like a partner.

Its inevitable that there will be some smears of blood here and there, and that’s why I suggest not to do it with someone you’re strictly casual with. Well, unless they are very open to it. I once met someone who said period sex was for “the devil.” Trust Nigerians to overexaggerate and involve the devil when he’s just there minding his business.

But seriously, when it comes to period sex, would you say it’s intimate, or uncomfortable?

In a bid to find out what other women think, I spoke with two Nigerian women who shared their opinions, experiences and thoughts on having sex on your period.

Have You Ever Had Sex On Your Period?

Oge [25, bisexual]: Yes, I have.

Faith [27, straight]: Yes, I have.

How Often Do You Have Period Sex, And Do You Usually Enjoy It When You Do?

Oge: I actually have period sex quite often, and weirdly enough, I really enjoy it.

Faith: Not that often really. And of course, I really do.

What Would You Say You Honestly Enjoy About It? Does It Feel Different Than Normal Sex?

Oge: I think it’s very intimate. I mean if I can open my legs and let you fuck me while I’m on my period, I have to be very comfortable and have some connection with you. I am also hornier when I’m on my period so it’s very easy to get me turned on. If I’m also being entirely honest, there’s that extra moistness, if you know what I mean.

Faith: I just want to have sex whenever I can, and whenever I want to, being on my period doesn’t change that. I always enjoy sex but I think I enjoy sex a little more when I’m on my period. It’s usually very messy though, but the sex is usually amazing.

Is There Anything You Don’t Like About It?

Oge: It gets messy. I have my period for 7 days and my flow is heavy, so I am always so conscious not to make a mess. I once had sex with a guy who stopped midway, and his reason was because he was scared that I was going to gush out all over him. As if.

Faith: I get scared that I may gross the guy out; I get worried about the smell. Basically I just overthink and worry too much, so at times I may not be as relaxed as I would like to be.

What Was Your First Experience Like?

Oge: I was so nervous. Luckily for me, the first time I had sex on my period was with a girl, so she wasn’t too bothered about the mess. We had sex in the shower so it wasn’t as messy as I pictured it to be, plus she used a dildo on me. She made me feel comfortable and at ease.

Faith: My first period sex experience was with my first real boyfriend. It was the third day so my flow was very light. He seemed to have had some experience with it because he brought out towels and cloths and didn’t have any issues. Overall I was very comfortable but still a bit anxious.

When You Tell People You Don’t Mind Period Sex, What Is Their Reaction Like?

Oge: Frankly speaking, they act shocked at least 8 out of 10 times.

Faith: If I want to have sex when I’m on my period, I would tell my partner. If he agrees to it, that’s fine. If he doesn’t, that’s fine too. However, when I tell people I am just casually sleeping with, they are usually surprised. Some are very excited to try it, while some others aren’t into it at all.

Would You Advise Other Women to Try Having Sex On Their Period?

Oge: Yes, definitely! I promise you, it feels so good. Although, I would say that its very intimate, so you can’t be having period sex with just anyone. Talk to your partner and see if he/she is into it as well. This is to ensure that everyone is comfortable with it. Also, you can be creative with it. Find out if you prefer period sex strictly in the shower, or if you don’t mind bringing out some fresh cloths or towels in the bedroom. Just make sure both of you are very comfortable (especially you).

Faith: I guess so. But I will say this; communication is key. Make sure whoever you’re trying to have period sex with is about that life. You don’t want to take that step with someone who will make you feel weird or irritated, so just communicate beforehand.

For Curious Cats Who Want To Try Period Sex But Are Worried About The Mess It May Cause, How Do You Clean Up Post Period Sex?

Oge: I will say have it in the shower. It’s easier to clean up and just wash up. Period sex can be really messy, so I usually just do it in the shower to make things easier for me. Towels are also a great idea.

Faith: Use dark towels, duvets, and cloths. When you’re done, soak them in warm water and detergent so the blood doesn’t dry up and leave a stain. If you’re up to the task, use your hands and wash them up immediately, or just throw them in the washing machine. I personally still add some antiseptic, I don’t know why, I just do that. I would also add that these towels used should be kept specifically for period sex.

This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

If you have sex on your period because you think you can’t get pregnant, whoops! sorry to break it to you babe, but you’re living a risky life. Your period doesn’t protect you from pregnancy and STIs. Although you’re less likely to get pregnant if you have sex right at the start of your period, and even then its still 50/50.

Our bodies are weird, as are our menstrual cycles, so period or not, use protection.
