Earlier this year on January 22nd, the question Who is Ayra Starr?  was on just about everyone’s lips, and this was due to the fact that the world (and the internet) had just been introduced to a brand new artiste who had just dropped a brand new self-titled EP.

At just 18-years-old, Nigerian-Beninese singer Arya Starr (born Oyinkansola Aderibigbe) went from making and sharing covers on Instagram to getting signed to one of Africa’s biggest labels Mavin Records, and releasing the Ayra Starr EP that made her a superstar in less than a day.

We got to have a quick chat with Ayra about what it’s like being signed to Mavin Records, her inspiration behind her hit song ‘Away’, her favorite skin care products and more.

Ayra Starr (@ayrastarr)

Hi Ayra! Can You Share What Inspired You To Start Making Music?

My love for music didn’t kickstart from a particular event or phase in my life, it’s always been a part of me right from a young age.

So, When Was That Moment In Your Life That You Knew You Wanted To Pursue Music As A Career?

When I started sharing my covers on the internet, the reaction I got from people gave me more confidence that music was definitely a great idea for me. I think the one time it really hit me was when I dropped my first original song which also got recognition from Jazzy.

What’s It Like Being Signed To Mavin Records And Working With Don Jazzy?

It’s amazing. I’m grateful for everyone from Don Jazzy to the whole team. It’s been a great experience so far and I’ve managed to grow and learn a lot.

How Would You Describe Your Sound?

I like to describe my sound as a projection of ‘feelings’ instead of genres so I’d say Emotional, Raw, Free and Euphoric.

“As A Projection Of Feelings Instead Of Genres”, I Love That. Can You Remember The First Song You Ever Wrote And What It Was About?

The first song I ever wrote was a remix to Michael Jackson’s They Don’t Really Care About Us because I used to get bullied in school and writing the song helped me stand up to my bully.. he still continued bullying me though.

I’m Sorry You Had To Experience That. However, It’s Good To Know That Music Was A Thing You Took Power From To Help You Stand Up To Your Bully.

Yes, Thank you.

In Terms Of Collaborations, Who Are Some Artistes You Would Love To Work With?

Burna boy/ Sza/ Kendrick Lamar/ Kanye West/ Rihanna.

What Would You Say Is Your Favorite Song Off Your Self-Titled EP?

I love all the songs equally, I call them my kids and it’s unfair to like one song more than the other.

I Have To Ask, Who Or What  Inspired The Song ‘Away’ ? I Honestly Can’t Get Over The Lyrics.

(laughs) I do not like to go into full details of the meaning behind ‘Away’ as I feel it could restrict people’s imagination to the song. I want people to be able to listen to it and feel it for themselves and give it their own meaning.

Are Any Of The Songs On Your EP Written After Anyone? A Friend, An Ex, Or A Boyfriend Maybe?

That’s for me to know and for you guys to find out later (wink).

Once The World Is Back To Normal, What Is The First Song You Would Like To Perform?

I cannot wait to perform Away, Sare.. in fact all the songs.

Can’t Wait To Watch You Perform. When You Aren’t Recording Or Making Music, What Are Some Of Your Favorite Things To Do?

Well, I like to read books & binge watch tv shows.

Don’t Think I Haven’t Noticed Your Long Big Box Braids And Your Chic Looks, How Would You Describe Your Fashion Style?

I would describe it according to my mood. If I’m tired I’m going to dress like a chic cozy human being, if I’m happy I’ll dress happy. Most times I like to dress comfy.

You Have Gorgeous Skin, Sis! What Are Your Favorite Skincare Products You Can’t Do/Live Without?

Thank you. I can’t do without my face wash. I wash my face about 2-3 times in a day and I use my Fenty face wash which is my premium product I can’t do without. Face wash & Serum.

How Would You Describe ‘Ayra Starr’ In 5 Words?

Ayra Starr is Open minded, Intelligent, Kind, Sincere & Happy.

Do You Have Any Self-Love/Confidence Tips You Would Like To Share?

Be patient with yourself. Once you’re calm and patient enough you get to slowly learn more about who you are. Speak to yourself, write a poem about yourself and dwell on whatever makes you feel confident. I like to write music and watch videos from powerful women and tap into that power. Find what makes you happy and your true self and dwell in that.

We Saw That You Recently Hosted Some Of Your Friends To A Sleepover, How Thoughtful Of You. Would You Say You’re Big On Female Friendships Then?

Yes. I’ve had the same friends since the age of 5 and then some friends from uni. They’re about 3 and they have been there since the beginning. I’m big on female friendships also as well as family.

What Would You Say Has Been The Highlight Of Your Career So Far? We Know You’re Just Getting Started!

The highlight of my year so far has been my fans. The amount of fan love I get on a daily. The daily messages telling me how much they love me makes me feel amazing.

So, What’s Next For Ayra Starr?

More music on the way. More videos from the EP. Get ready!
