The Personality Alignment Chart Might Be The Only Vibe Check You Need

By now, we’ve all been there: you’ve checked his birth chart to see if his Venus is in Scorpio. You’ve forced your work bestie to take the Myers-Briggs test so you know how to phrase an email to her. But if you really want to get to the core of why your roommate hasn’t washed her dishes in three weeks or why your sister is still dating that guy who insists on wearing a net singlet as a top you need to consult the Personality Alignment Chart.

Originating from the world of Dungeons & Dragons (yes, the same one Stranger Things fans know and love), the Personality Alignment Chart has long since broken free from the realm of fantasy. These days, it’s the internet’s favourite way to explain everyone’s questionable life choices—from the friend who always “forgets” their wallet to the colleague who replies, “Noted,” with barely concealed rage.

How the Personality Alignment Chart Works

The Personality Alignment Chart is a three-by-three grid built around two questions: how do you relate to rules? and how do you relate to other people? It categorizes people into 9 personality types: Lawful good, neutral good, chaotic good, lawful neutral, true neutral, chaotic neutral, lawful evil, neutral evil and chaotic evil.

Lawful people (think: order, structure, codes, tradition) believe the world needs structure to survive. Chaotic people (think: freedom, autonomy, improvisation, and suspicion of authority) believe rules are just suggestions made by people who aren’t having enough fun. Neutrals, meanwhile, are just trying to get through the day.

Good means you’re motivated by helping others (think: concern for other people’s wellbeing). Evil simply means you’re looking out for yourself. You aren’t necessarily a supervillain, you’re just deeply, unapologetically self-serving.

As a personality lens, the Personality Alignment Chart answers two questions that most personality typologies bury: do you trust systems or improvise around them? And when your interests and someone else’s collide, whose comes first?

Ready to find out where you (and your ex) land? Let’s dive in.

If You Know, You Know: Top 12 Canon Events Every Woman Experiences

1. Lawful Good

The Lawful Good person is the glue holding society together. They genuinely believe that if everyone just followed the rules, we’d all be happy. They’re the ones who have refused to japa and genuinely want to build Nigeria back to its former glory. In friendships, they’re the “mum” of the group. Yes, they have an extra pad in their bag, a spare tyre in their trunk, and Panadol if someone around them has a headache.

Their motto is: “Do the right thing, the right way.”

Think of someone who:

  • Promptly filed their personal income tax after the Nigeria Revenue Service announced the 31 March deadline.
  • Reads terms and conditions from beginning to end.
  • Never, ever passes a red light—even when the road is empty.
  • Queues properly at the bank even when everyone else is trying to find a shortcut.

This is the friend you absolutely cannot call when you’re about to do something “wrong.” She will not support your delulu. And even when she tries to break character and join you in being bad, her constant whining and fearmongering will force you to tell her to go back home.

Still, you love her so much that you avoid putting her in situations where she’d have to break the rules. In a fight, you might call her a “goody two-shoes” or “Assistant Jesus,” but generally, you understand it’s not that she’s a buzzkill—she just has principles. And somehow, that’s exactly why you like her.

2. Neutral Good

Neutral Good people don’t care about the “proper” way to do things; they just want everyone to be okay. They’ll follow the law, but they aren’t obsessed with it. Helping comes first; methods are negotiable.

Their motto is: “I respect the rules… until the rules get in the way of being a decent human being.”

Think of someone who:

  • Breaks a petty rule if it means helping someone.
  • Lies to your parents that you’re with them so you don’t get in trouble.
  • Helps you get a job by calling someone they know, even though you don’t have all the qualifications yet, because they believe you’ll prove yourself.
  • Lets you use their address for a job application because they know your current situation is complicated.

This is your neighbour who sees you struggling to carry a giant box into your flat and drops everything to help you haul it up three flights of stairs. They don’t care if they’re technically loitering in the hallway—you needed a hand, so they gave you one.

3. Chaotic Good

This is the person with a heart of gold and a complete disregard for authority. They challenge unjust systems and trust conscience over code.

Their motto is: “Good intentions, questionable methods.”

Think of someone who:

  • You’d call to beat up your abusive ex.
  • Sneaks tequila into the club because the drinks are ridiculously expensive.
  • Tells the waiter it’s your birthday just to get you a free dessert.
  • You barely tell your relationship issues, because you know they are about to fuck shit up on your behalf.
  • Says, “Since we all want to be mad,” far too often.

Your friend finds out your cheating ex is proposing to someone else. She doesn’t send a polite text. Instead, she crashes the engagement party, “accidentally” connects her phone to the Bluetooth speaker, and plays the voice notes he sent you two weeks ago.

What to Do When Your Friend Is in an Unhealthy Relationship

4. Lawful Neutral

For Lawful Neutrals, the process is more important than the result. They aren’t trying to be mean, they just believe that without systems, we’re all just monkeys with smartphones. They’re the ultimate “by-the-book” employees. They value consistency, precedent, and process, regardless of who it favours.

Their motto is: “What is the correct procedure?”

Think of someone who:

  • Never joins a Zoom call a second late.
  • Wears a blazer to a “casual” Friday.
  • Treats the estate’s group chat rules like they’re the Nigerian Constitution.

This is the HR manager who denies your request for a Friday off because you missed the “two-week notice” window by exactly four hours. They don’t have a vendetta against you, they just believe that if they make an exception for you, the entire corporate infrastructure will crumble.

5. True Neutral

True Neutrals are the ultimate chillers. These people aren’t trying to be heroes, villains, rule-followers, or rebels. They’re just… existing.

They aren’t interested in leading the revolution, but they aren’t going to stop it either. They stay out of the drama and just want to live their lives in peace. A True Neutral weighs each situation on its merits and chooses balance and practicality over ideology.

Their motto is basically: “It is what it is.”

Think of someone who:

  • Never checks the group chat.
  • Doesn’t have a strong opinion on Beyoncé vs Rihanna or APC vs PDP.
  • Always votes for “whatever everyone else wants.”: Restaurant? “I’m easy.” Holiday destination? “Anywhere is fine.” Movie? “You people choose.”

This is the guy you went on three dates with who was perfectly nice, but when you asked where he sees himself in five years, he just shrugged and said, “God dey.” No plan. No passion project. No visa application in progress. He has no enemies, no controversial opinions, and probably still uses the same GTBank account he opened in secondary school.

6. Chaotic Neutral

Chaotic Neutrals are governed by one thing: their own whims. They aren’t malicious, but they are incredibly unpredictable. They do things simply because they think it’ll be funny or interesting in the moment. These people resist being told what to do.

Their motto? “Live and let live.”

Think of someone who:

  • Books a one-way ticket to a city you’ve never heard of on a random Tuesday.
  • Dyes their hair pink just because.
  • Quits their job on a Wednesday because “the vibes were off.”
  • Changes their entire aesthetic overnight because they watched one TikTok and decided they were now a minimalist.
  • Decides at 11 p.m. that they’re going to learn French, buys all the books, and never opens them again.

This is the friend who texts you, “GET READY, WE’RE GOING OUT,” at 11 p.m. on a work night. By 1 a.m., you’re at a karaoke bar singing STYL PLUS with a group of strangers she met in the bathroom. Respectfully, she doesn’t care about your 9 a.m. meeting.

7. Lawful Evil

Lawful Evil is the person who uses the rules to hurt people or gain power. They love a loophole. They’ll never break a contract, but they will absolutely write one that ruins you. They pursue their self-interest through order and hierarchy.

Lawful Evil is one of the funniest alignments because they’re technically right while being absolutely insufferable. They don’t break the rules, they weaponise them.

Their motto is basically: “If the rules favour me, why would I change them?”

Think of someone who:

  • Is the champion of weaponised incompetence.
  • Is a nightmare to break up with because they want to divide the cutlery according to who paid for it.
  • Forwards your private message because “you never said it was confidential.”
  • Insists the restaurant split the bill down to the last 33 kobo.
  • Never forgets a favour you owe them but develops sudden amnesia when it’s time to return one.

This is the coworker who notices you took a slightly longer lunch break and mentions it to the boss “out of concern for your workload.” They aren’t breaking any rules, they’re simply using the rules as a weapon to climb the ladder over your back.

8. Neutral Evil

Neutral Evil is pure, unadulterated selfishness. They don’t have a code of honour, but they aren’t looking for chaos either. They simply do whatever is easiest and most beneficial for them at any given moment, regardless of who it hurts.

The key difference is that Neutral Evil isn’t trying to cause drama (that’s Chaotic Evil), and isn’t hiding behind rules (that’s Lawful Evil). They’re simply asking themselves one question every time:

“How does this benefit me?”

If the answer is “It doesn’t,” they’re out.

Think of someone who:

  • Leaves you on read for a week, then texts “hey” like nothing happened.
  • Conveniently forgets to pay you back for that ₦150,000 concert ticket.
  • Uses your Netflix account but changes the password the moment they get their own.
  • Listens to all your plans and secrets but never shares theirs.
  • Only calls when they need a favour, but if you need help? Suddenly they’re busy.

This is the friend who keeps inviting you out because you have a car but somehow is always “broke” when it’s time to contribute towards fuel.

9. Chaotic Evil

Chaotic Evil is the person who just wants to watch the world burn. They don’t have a plan; they just have a vibe, and that vibe is destruction. They thrive on drama and will stir the pot purely for entertainment value.

Their motto is basically: “I wonder what would happen if I made this worse?”

Think of someone who:

  • Spoils the Game of Thrones finale on their Instagram Story.
  • “Accidentally” tells your secret to the one person you asked them not to tell.
  • Dates a married man simply because his wife brags too much.
  • Joins the family WhatsApp argument just to introduce a new piece of information that makes everyone angrier, then disappears.
  • Tells your strict Nigerian parents you went out—and provides photographic evidence.

This is the “friend” who intentionally brings up your ex’s new girlfriend at your birthday dinner just to see your reaction. They don’t gain anything from it. They just think the awkward silence is hilarious.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, the Personality Alignment Chart isn’t a scientific diagnosis (so maybe don’t use it to decide whether your situationship is marriage material). But it is a surprisingly accurate way to understand the people around you and, more importantly, yourself.

Because let’s be honest: we all know a Lawful Good friend who has a spreadsheet for everything, a Chaotic Neutral cousin who books random trips at midnight, and a Neutral Evil acquaintance who still owes us money from 2022.

The fun part isn’t figuring out where everyone else belongs. It’s realising that we all have a little bit of chaos, kindness, selfishness, and questionable decision-making in us.

So go ahead—place your friends on the chart.

Just be prepared when they place you right back.
