The Evolution of the Fuckboy: A Field Guide to His Many Forms

In the prehistoric era (the 2010s), identifying a fuckboy was a simple task. The signs were practically glaring: a deep V-neck two sizes too small, a “U up?” text sent at 2:15 a.m., cryptic BBM statuses, and the unwavering belief that every ex was “crazy.”

But like any highly adaptable species, the fuckboy evolved. He survived the extinction of obvious red flags and adapted to a new ecosystem: one filled with therapy-speak, emotional intelligence podcasts, soft-life aesthetics, and the collective desire for “good vibes only.”

Today, the fuckboy is a shapeshifter. He might be beside you in yoga class, quoting Chimamanda Adichie word-for-word, or occupying the most dangerous position of all: your “best friend.” He no longer announces himself with warning signs, he arrives disguised as a man who “has done the work.”

To survive the modern dating pool without drowning in mediocrity, you must learn to identify the different subspecies. Welcome to the definitive field guide to the modern fuckboy.

8 Women Share Their Biggest Dating Regrets, And Its Heartbreaking

1. The Hookup Specialist

The original. The blueprint. The factory settings. His objective is anatomical, but his strategy is theatrical. He knows most women aren’t signing up for a hit-and-run, so he stages a one-man production called I’m Actually a Romantic.

He’ll shower you with compliments that sound like they were generated by ChatGPT after binge-reading Colleen Hoover. He’ll call you “my woman,” “my babe,” or “wifey” just often enough to make you feel chosen, but vaguely enough that he can deny he ever promised you anything.

Before sex, he’s texting “Have you eaten?” every three hours and sending you good morning messages before your alarm goes off. Afterwards, he’s suddenly “swamped at work,” “not really on his phone,” or “mentally exhausted.” The romance wasn’t fake, it was just promotional material. Once he got what he came for, the campaign ends.

2. The Guy Who’s Emotionally Driven

Contrary to popular belief, not every fuckboy is powered by sex. Some are fuelled almost entirely by attention.

He doesn’t necessarily want to sleep with you, but he certainly  wants to be adored by you. He craves the emotional high of being your favourite person. He wants you to check in on him, reassure him, celebrate his wins, nurse his wounds, and constantly remind him that he’s “one of the good ones.”

He’ll spend hours on the phone with you, swap childhood trauma, send “I got home safely” texts, and make you feel like you’ve stumbled into the healthiest relationship of your life. But the moment you ask the perfectly reasonable question, “So… what are we?” he reacts as though you’ve asked him to solve a differential equation in Mandarin.

3. The Ego-Stroker

For this specimen, dating isn’t about connection, it’s more about collecting achievements. You are less of a person and more of a trophy with a pulse.

He gravitates towards successful, beautiful, accomplished, or generally “out-of-his-league” women because winning your attention validates his ego. He’s not particularly interested in your personality, he’s interested in what being seen with you says about him.

The chase is the point. The moment he “wins”, whether that’s securing the first date, the first kiss, the first hookup, or finally making it onto your Instagram Story, his interest evaporates. The dopamine rush is over. While you’re busy wondering where the sweet, attentive man disappeared to, he’s already scanning the horizon for his next conquest. After all, trophies don’t stay shiny forever.

4. The Professional Victim

His last serious relationship ended years ago, but somehow it’s still the third person in every conversation. His personality is built on the ruins of a heartbreak he’s never quite retired. Every questionable behaviour comes with a ready-made disclaimer: “I’ve been hurt before.” It’s less an explanation than a lifetime warranty against accountability.

He’ll sigh, “I’ve been burned so badly, I just don’t know if I can trust again,” moments before disappearing for three days, refusing to communicate, or doing the most egregious selfish thing. Every time you call out his behaviour, the conversation somehow circles back to what his ex did to him. Soon, you stop expecting consistency and start trying to prove that you’re “different.” Here’s the catch: healing isn’t your job. You can’t fix a man who’s using yesterday’s heartbreak as today’s permission slip to treat people badly.

5. The Nice Guy

This is the most dangerous species because the packaging is immaculate.

He is polite. He remembers your birthday. He asks about your mum’s health. He holds doors open and says all the right things. He has mastered the art of looking like the kind of man your aunties would proudly recommend. The problem? His kindness is often just conflict avoidance in a nice outfit.

He avoids difficult conversations, not because he is considerate, but because honesty would require consequences. He keeps four situationships running simultaneously because he “doesn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings”—apparently unaware that confusing, misleading, and emotionally exhausting everyone is also a form of harm. By trying to be everyone’s favourite person, he becomes everyone’s worst experience. He isn’t a good guy. He’s a coward with good manners, a clean haircut, and excellent public relations.

6. The Almost Boyfriend

He’s your confidant. Your emergency contact for emotional breakdowns. The first person you call when life is life-ing. He knows your childhood trauma, your biggest fears, and the names of all your cousins.

Everyone assumes you’re dating. Honestly, so do you—except no one ever actually says it. Whenever the conversation veers towards defining the relationship, he suddenly develops an allergy to labels. He loves everything that comes with having a girlfriend (the emotional support, the loyalty, the constant availability) without accepting any of the responsibility. Meanwhile, he keeps his relationship status conveniently undefined, so he can pivot to someone new the moment things start to require commitment. His favourite line? “I don’t want to ruin what we have.”

7. The Zen Manipulator

Beware the man who uses “alignment” as a synonym for avoiding accountability. He won’t tell you he’s seeing other people, he’ll say he’s “honouring his journey” and “exploring his expansive energy.” He doesn’t ghost you—he’s simply “protecting his peace.” He doesn’t ignore your messages—he’s “setting boundaries.”

Every attempt at a serious conversation becomes a spiritual obstacle course. Tell him you’re hurt, and suddenly you’re “operating from a place of ego.” Ask for consistency, and apparently your “attachment wounds are showing.” Express a basic need, and he’ll suggest that your “vibrations need healing.”

He has mastered the art of using therapy language, spirituality, and self-awareness vocabulary to disguise plain old selfishness. He isn’t enlightened. He’s just a regular fuckboy who discovered that “my bad” sounds less impressive than “I’m doing inner work.”

8. The Two-Timer

Are Married Men Not Tired of Recycling These Lies?

He has a girlfriend. Or a fiancée. Or a wife. But don’t worry—they’re “basically over,” “taking a break,” or “in an open relationship.” According to him, his partner just doesn’t understand his “true self” the way you do.

Here’s the plot twist: his partner has absolutely no idea she’s in an open relationship. He’s not ethically non-monogamous. He’s just a regular cheat with exceptional branding. Somewhere along the line, he discovered that calling it “ethical non-monogamy” sounds far more sophisticated than admitting he’s incapable of fidelity and, admittedly, it makes for a much better dating app bio.

9. The Golden Retriever

He’s the “Golden Retriever.” He posts pictures with his nieces, loves animals, and holds the door open for the elderly. He’s smart enough to know that the “bad boy” trope is dead, so he plays the “wholesome” card to lower your defenses.

Underneath that soft-boy aesthetic is a cold, calculating strategist who knows that if he acts like a gentleman, he can get away with being a monster later. Because when you complain to your friends that he vanished, they’ll say, “But he seemed so nice!” That is his greatest weapon.

10. The Lifestyle Leech

He’s not looking for love at all, he’s looking for a sponsor. He’s drawn to women with stable jobs, family money, or an apartment he can “accidentally” start spending every weekend at. Somehow, his wallet is always acting up when the bill arrives, and his bank app perpetually does not have network

He’ll call you his “peace,” “his answered prayer,” and “a real woman who understands.” Translation: a woman who won’t notice that she’s quietly funding his lifestyle. He doesn’t want a sugar mummy, of course. That’s a crude way of putting it. He just believes relationships are about “supporting each other”—with a suspiciously one-way interpretation of the word support.

11. The Dream Weaver

This man has a five-year plan for your relationship. Within three weeks, he’s mapping out your honeymoon, debating baby names, and telling you which side of the bed you’ll sleep on when you finally move in together. He’ll casually mention taking you home to meet his mum, discuss your dream wedding, and insist he’s “never felt this way before.”

It’s intoxicating until you realise he knows more about your imaginary future than your actual present. He can’t remember your middle name, your birthday, or how you like to be pleased, but somehow he’s already picked out your children’s schools. Essentially, he doesn’t care for you in the true sense of things, he only loves the idea of you.

12. The Brutal Truth Teller

He uses honesty as a weapon. He’ll say things like, “I told you I wasn’t looking for anything serious,” while simultaneously acting like your boyfriend. He thinks that as long as he warned you, he has a license to treat you like a disposable napkin. He believes transparency is a substitute for kindness. It isn’t.

Our Takeaway

Modern Dating Sucks. Where Did Romance Go?

The modern fuckboy has perfected the art of the almost-relationship. He wants the intimacy without the commitment, the loyalty without the labels, the emotional labour without the responsibility, and, when it suits him, the benefits of a relationship without ever agreeing to be in one.

If you find yourself decoding one-word replies like they’re ancient scripture, checking his “Active Now” status for clues, or wondering whether asking for honesty and consistency makes you “too much,” chances are you’ve encountered one in the wild. The good news? You don’t have to become an expert in fuckboy taxonomy to survive. The easiest way to identify one is to pay less attention to what he says and more attention to what he consistently does.

And if all else fails, remember this: the only prize for winning a situationship is… more situationship. Close the field guide, delete the contact, and go date a grown up.
