There is something comforting about watching sad movies, or am I just weird?

Whether you’re looking for an epic tragedy or a beautiful romantic movie that will leave you with puffy eyes, a good cry while watching a movie can be somewhat therapeutic. So get that box of tissue and get comfortable under your duvet, we are about to break down 8 movies guaranteed to make you ball your eyes out:

  1. PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS

Based on a true life story about a man who couldn’t catch a break, life just kept hitting him hard in every possible way. From his wife leaving him, to him losing all his life savings, to being evicted and having to live in a homeless shelter. This movie was genuinely sad and the fact that it really happened to someone made it even more depresing. Starring Will Smith and his son Jaden Smith, this movie was such an emotional roller coaster from tears to anger to huge laughs. The ending made me happy because above all, he finally caught a break. A must watch!

Available on Amazon Prime

  1. THE FAULT IN OUR STARS

This American romantic tragedy film starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort will definitely leave you crying hot tears. It’s about two cancer-afflicted teenagers who fall in love. Brace yourself, because this film is really heart breaking and isn’t your typical teenage rom-com.. clearly.

It was not predictable at all, and I think that’s what made it a whole lot sadder. The ending broke my heart for a week, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. It was such a beautiful watch. If you want to break your heart even more, I suggest reading the book.

Available on Netflix

  1. QUEEN AND SLIM

Queen and Slim was a phenomenal movie with so many strong messages. The movie tackled racial profiling, love, trust and police brutality. Directed by Melina Matsoukas and written by Lena Waithe, comes a movie about two people whose first date takes an unexpected turn when they get pulled over by the police. This movie was really amazing to watch. It really shows us how terrifying it can be to be black in America. The real tears come at the end, I cried really ugly ones.

  1. ME BEFORE YOU

A  love story between people from opposite worlds, whose paths would never have crossed if not for the situation that led to them meeting. Starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin comes a tragedy that you already expected from the beginning of the movie, but hoped wouldn’t happen. It is unrealistically romantic but I love it. Watching this movie  will make you consider what you would have done if you were in the same situation.

Available on Amazon prime

  1. LES MISERABLES

I have never seen a musical that made me cry the way Les Misérables did. The movie adaptation of this classic book is well, full of miserable people. The performances were phenomenal. You definitely can’t from hard guy with this one, you will cry during some scenes. I love this movie so much, I can’t recommend it enough. It’s a musical, so there’s singing, romance, history and action. The actors were just breath-taking, they deserved all the accolades they got.

Available on Amazon Prime

  1. FOR COLOURED GIRLS

This movie is so deep, I cried all though. The plot and story line covered so many struggles that black women face. I really can’t describe the emotions I felt watching this movie, even thinking about it right now I’m still short of words. You just have to watch it to understand. The entire cast was amazing and the directing was really good.

Available on Amazon Prime

  1. A WALK TO REMEMBER

Sad isn’t the best way to describe this movie. It’s one of the most romantic movies I have ever seen till date. After being assigned to do community service in a play, a young boy falls in love with a reverend’s daughter. This movie really shows how one person can allow themselves to grow and learn from their past. Mandy Moore is a phenomenal actress, I’m so in love with her!

Available on Netflix

  1. TITANIC

A love story that never gets lost in time. This is the best way to describe this film. Your typical poor-boy, rich-girl love story but with so much more romance. Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet are two of the greatest movie actors of our time and their performance in this film is what made the film so special, in my opinion. The ending of the movie really got me in my feelings, as it did everyone else.

Fun fact: Jack and Rose were the only fictional characters in this film, every other person and most events were based on the actual people on the ship.

Available on Amazon Prime

Let me know what movies on this list you’ve seen, and the one’s that made you cry!
