We have finally entered the most controversial month of the year ‘February’, some people love it and some cannot wait for it to end, you will hardly find an in between. Popularly known as the month of love and all things red, this indicates Valentine’s Day is around the corner. All the mannequins on display are adorned with red clothing, supermarkets are taking advantage of the season by having Valentine hampers and faux red roses on display 24/7 and the question that seems to be on everyone’s lips is “what are you doing for Valentine’s day and with who?”.
As a single gal myself, Valentine’s day is a solo affair for me this year and I cannot express how pleased and content I am. However, I noticed the desire ‘to have and to hold’ creep in due to the festivities and excessive Valentine packages being advertised on social media.
Valentine’s day does not have to suck just because you are unattached, so I am going to be sharing a guide on how to have the ultimate Bachelorette Valentine’s day.
Step 1: Girl Get Dressed!
We all have an outfit we mentally pictured will be perfect for date night, why not put it on for yourself? Whether or not you have plans to take yourself out or stay home all day, a vital step to feeling good is looking good. Regardless of your relationship status, you should be looking good for yourself and Valentine’s day is no exception. Treat yourself to a pedicure and get your hair and nails done prior. Top it off with an outfit that makes you feel comfortable yet desirable and voila! Blow those kisses at yourself in the mirror. You deserve it!
Step 2: Plan Something Fun
I am fully aware that a Netflix party of one is a class favorite, but I think we can all agree that it would not be so bad to branch out and try more fun activities for Valentine’s day. Set up a cute station in your living room for a paint and sip date by yourself, and if you are ready to endure the Lagos rush on the 14th, book an appointment for a lunch or dinner date by yourself or with a friend. Valentine’s day is not only meant to be enjoyed by couples, pick out fun activities for a day of self-love.
Step 3: Gift Yourself
A personal favorite, but who says it is a crime to gift yourself something extra special for Valentine’s day? I strongly believe how you treat yourself outside of a relationship sets a standard for how you expect to be treated in a relationship. As superficial as it may seem, even down to the little things like how you treat yourself with cute gifts, sends a message to potential suitors. If you do not already, gifting yourself on Valentine’s day is a wonderful way to start. All you need to do is pick out something nice for yourself and wrap it with cute wrapping paper beforehand and watch your heart fill up with self-love as you unbox it on Valentine’s day.
Step 4: Host A Virtual Girls Night
Now I know Galentine is on the 13th, but you can never really have too much girl time. Whether it is a virtual screening of ‘To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before: Always and Forever’, a virtual throwback dance party or playing online games like bingo with your girlfriends on Valentine’s day screams a good time to me. Like I always say, quality time spent with your girlfriends is time well spent.

Step 5: End The Day With A Love Letter To Yourself And Spend Quality Time With Yourself
Writing a love letter to yourself is a new concept I recently started exploring and I will highly recommend for everyone to try. This is an expression of self-love and if your love language is words of affirmation, making this a regular part of your routine is bound to serve you well. End your day of self-love by replenishing your soul by enjoying your own company journaling, introspecting, or reading a good book. I have come to realize satisfaction and happiness cannot be found in a relationship, we must first find and create it within ourselves.
Singleness is not linear and entering a relationship should never become ‘the be all and end all’ of our lives. Whether you are waiting for that special someone or have decided a romantic relationship is just not for you, nothing says we single gals cannot enjoy a ‘single gals’ Valentine’s day. After all, self-love is the best love! Let’s have fun dodging all of Cupid’s arrows this season all while dancing to ‘Single ladies’ by Queen B.
