Conceal, color, and correct: check.
Maybe it’s consumerism, maybe it’s way too much PR, or maybe it’s an undiagnosed case of ADHD. I am still determining which it is, but I rarely ever finish any of my makeup. Instead, I try a product, try it again, get bored, and then try another—same old story. But ever since I saw and tried the MAC Cosmetics Every-Wear All-Over Face Pen, I have had a lot of trouble using something else for my base routine. And here’s why.
Product Details
MAC Cosmetics Studio Fix Every-Wear All-Over Face Pen is a medium-to-full coverage concealer pen with a soft, matte, skin-like finish. My shade is NC47 which has a neutral undertone that is perfect for my skin tone. This product comes in 33 shades and is available at a MAC store near you.
My Initial Thoughts
I was pretty intrigued when I got the product. I mean, a concealer that doubles as a foundation and has a natural matte finish? And in a futuristic-looking pen, at that? They took ‘spot conceal’ literally, and I am digging it. But as fancy as the packaging is, there are other great things about the product. Read on to know my thoughts on the face pen and why you should cop this for a flawless base.
How to Use It
The face pen comes with an ejector and a see-through side cut-out where you can tell how much of the foundation you’ve used. It works the same way a retractable ink cartridge pen works. The pen also comes with a stopper at the tip to prevent accidental spilling, and I have a feeling the tote bag girlies like me will appreciate this detail.
Now the pen has two modes: half-click to spot-conceal or medium coverage, and full click for full coverage. On my cheeks and chin are several dark spots that have refused to budge to the power of tranexamic and kojic acid, so I tried spot-concealing with half clicks first. After this, I used my fingers to blend it out, and the results were phenomenal. It covered my spots and still gave me a soft, matte, skin-like finish.
Next, I used it as the foundation for my base. I will say ejecting this in streaks on my cheeks is way more fun and relaxing than it should have been. I’m partial to makeup sponges, so I used that to blend out the streaks, but this works well with fingers and a brush. After blending, it was a my-skin-but-better situation. It blurred out my skin concerns and brightened up my dark circles too. With a half click and an angle brush, I also used the face pen to sharpen my brows and clean the underside. Add this to the never-ending list of things you can do with this product.
Once I was done with the pen, I set my under eyes with the MAC Studio Fix Pro Set + Blur Loose Powder and sprayed on the MAC Prep + Prime Finishing Mist. Here’s what I love most about the concealer pen.
Things I Love About The MAC Cosmetics Face Pen
First off, the coverage. I love how you can build your desired coverage with this, whether a medium base for your clean girl makeup looks or a full coverage one for nights where you want to go full glam. The ingredient list is also top-tier, as it did not dry my skin out. Usually, when a complexion product markets itself as matte, I get worried because most of them dry me out and crease my under-eye area. But this one contains vitamin E, hyaluronic acid, and caffeine. That probably explains why I had no creasing for about 8 hours of wear.
It’s also long-wearing, and I love how I can pop it into my bag and take it everywhere without worrying about it spilling into my beloved tote bags. I also take the MAC Studio Fix Loose Powder with me, even though I rarely ever need them.
What I’m Not So Crazy About
First off, where are the refills? I’m halfway through my first pen, and it fills me with dread knowing I’ll have to throw this pen out someday. A refill concealer cartridge that can be popped in and out would be Christmas for makeup lovers trying to live conscious of their environment.
Overall, this Every-Wear All-Over Face Pen by MAC Cosmetics is my new favorite base item for that effortless matte finish, and it deserves a spot in your makeup routine.
