Your Bedroom is literally your sanctuary. It is where your day begins and ends, and most times it is the only place where you can be alone. No one wants to wake up in a lifeless, cluttered, uninspiring space, so I discovered 6 items you can get to create the aesthetically pleasing room you have been craving.
1/ Mirrors are great pieces that instantly make your interior fabulous. Apart from the decorative touch it gives, they are perfect for giving rooms a brighter and larger feel. Mirrors come in so many shapes and sizes, so you can choose whatever suits your style. If you do not find what you like, there’s always the option of having a carpenter customize one for you. They are inexpensive and readily available so it is easy to purchase them. Let’s not forget that having one in your room allows you to stare at your gorgeous self all day long, why wouldn’t you want that?
2/ Potted Plants are the rave right now! There’s a range of beautiful indoor plants to choose from, some more high maintenance than others. If you are feeling artsy you can decide to paint your plant pot with some acrylics. Research shows that indoor plants boosts creativity and reduces stress levels. So if you choose to be a plant mom, you don’t only get to make your room look good, you also get to feel good. Sounds like a win-win to me.
3/ Floating Shelves are as practical as they are elegant. These gravity defying shelves enhance your space, and sometimes they serve as a room divider. Use these shelves to keep your books, plants, art or whatever object that pleases you. They come in a variety of materials, but glass wall shelves are an instant home décor turn on for me. The illusion of space and the way it lets light filter through to fill a room with light and render the space airy? Inject it! You don’t have to break the bank to obtain them, a good carpenter and some Naira notes from your piggy bank will do.
4/ Paintings are the most common décor items. You see them in houses, stores, restaurants etc, and they almost never disappoint. They literally just fit.
You do not need to have The Mona Lisa hanging in your bedroom (but hey! by all means buy it if you can). There’s always a painting for you within your price range. If at all you don’t want to spend a dime, you can always paint by yourself. Do not overthink it, you must not be Picasso to draw and color. If at all you are so terrible, it is okay to do jaga jaga on canvas, frame it and if any one askes, call it abstract art and proceed to make a deep statement on what inspired you. I and your 3 year old self will be so proud of you.
There is a host of other Wall Art that exist if you do not like paintings; Collages, Framed Word Art, Mosaics, you can even use a cute piece(s) of Ankara to wrap around a flat board/plank and hang it up. Cute and easy to do, right?
5/ Throw Pillows are super cute. Toss a throw pillow on a chair, sofa or your bed, and it goes from being cold to inviting. Again, they come in a variety of beautiful colors, patterns, shapes and sizes.
6/ Lights are non-negotiable when planning to glam up your room. Poor lighting will not only give your room a dull look, but will also diminish your appearance when you pick up video calls. Opt for bright white overhead lights. Other colors can also serve as a substitute for the times you crave a relaxing aura and you do not want it to feel like the sun is inside your room. Blue is a personal fave!
Overhead Lighting is essential, but don’t let it be your only light source. Get a cute table or floor lamp to improve lighting and accessorize. Candles are also a great option, they are enchanting and bolster your spirits when you feel romantic, sensual or serene.
With the Covid-19 pandemic currently happening, I believe there is no better time to create your dream space, seeing that it is where you’ll be spending most of your time indefinitely. Tag us in your pictures of your new and improved space once it’s ready!
