Alma Asinobi’s Best Kept Secrets for Solo-travelling

Kenya

Located in East Africa, Kenya is a breathtaking destination that offers a rich blend of culture and natural beauty, perfect for travellers seeking an affordable vacation.  As a Nigerian, you can visit with an E-Visa without having to apply directly to the Kenyan Embassy.

Estimated Flight Fare (Roundtrip): $1000-$1400.

Accommodation: $30-$100 per night.

Things to Do

If you’re an animal and nature lover, you will love the national parks and game reserves in Kenya. The Nairobi National Park, The Maasai National Reserve and Tsavo National Parks are some top tourist spots. Budget-friendly safari packages are available throughout the year, but visiting during the off-peak season (April to June) can lessen costs. As a nature enthusiast, seeing wildlife in their natural habitat needs to be ticked off your bucket list.

If you’re a beach girlie, The Kenyan coast boasts the most pristine and tranquil blue oceans with soft whitish sands, like Diani, Malinda and Watamu. These locations have a range of relatively cheap activities like sailing, diving and scuba diving.

Kenya has a flourishing coffee industry. For a modest fee, tour the Nairobi Coffee farm and factory—learn about every step of the coffee production process, and get the chance to sample some freshly brewed Kenyan coffee yourself.

Accra, Ghana

Accra—very much like Lagos city— is the bustling capital of Ghana, located in West Africa. To visit Ghana for a short period, Nigerians do not need a tourist visa. You can travel via airline or opt for a road trip of about 17 hours.

Estimated Flight Fare (Roundtrip): $450-$1000.

Accommodation: $40-$100 per night.

Things to Do

Go on a guided tour in James Town, Ga Mashie, the oldest district in Accra. This location boasts an interesting path from the dungeons where slaves were imprisoned into James Fort, where they’d be eventually sold.

Accra’s food scene has something for every palate. Relish street food—waakye, shitor, kelewele—from street vendors or try local food at tested and trusted restaurants like Buka Restaurant in Osu, Living Room at East Legon and Mum’s Kitchen at East Legon. For a more sophisticated experience, restaurants like Shogun and Kozo, come highly recommended.

Accra’s coastline also features several accessible and budget-friendly beaches ideal for a day of relaxation. Labidi Beach and Kokrobite are popular amongst tourists, with a small entry fee and affordable refreshments.

Dakar, Senegal

Senegal promises an affordable yet unforgettable journey. Its rich and immersive cultural heritage, incredible landscapes, and warm hospitality make it an attractive destination for budget travellers seeking an authentic experience without breaking the bank. Bonus points to it for being visa-free for Nigerian citizens.

Estimated Flight Fare (Roundtrip): $1200-$1600.

Accommodation: $30-$100 per night.

Things to Do

Dakar is home to numerous cultural and historical sites that offer deep insights into Senegal’s heritage at minimal cost. Visit the Island of Gorée—a 20-minute ferry ride from Dakar to a car-free island that is a prominent symbol of the transatlantic slave trade. Participate in traditional and contemporary festivals, such as the St. Louis Jazz Festival, which usually takes place around this time of year.

Dakar is dotted with artisan markets, like Marche Kermel in Dakar and Marche Artisanal de Soumbedioune in Saint-Louis. These markets offer one-of-a-kind, locally-made crafts, clothing, and souvenirs at modest prices while supporting local artisans.

If you want to be spoiled with choices when it comes to beaches, Dakar is the place to be, as it happens to have some of the best beaches in West Africa. Visit N’gor Beach famous for its clear blue waters and vibrant energy, or go to Virage Beach, popular among surfers because of its consistent waves.

Mauritius

Mauritius is a subtropical island country in the south of Africa that offers an exotic visa-free travel destination. Unlike other countries, Mauritius is an ideal year round destination, enjoying sunshine throughout the year.

Estimated Flight Fare (Roundtrip): $1200-$2500 (Bahamas on a budget. It’s 52% cheaper!).

Accommodation: $60-$150 per night.

Things to Do

Because of its persistent sunshine, Mauritius offers the most satisfying beach days. There are plenty of beaches along the coastlines of Mauritius Island. From lengthy to small tranquil ones, each beach has its own unique features and beauty. The romantic and picturesque nature of Mauritius makes it perfect for weddings, honeymoons and vacations.

This paradise also offers panoramic views for those craving a dreamy outdoorsy trip. Go to Chamarel’s Seven Coloured Earth Geopark to witness an iconic colourful landscape and one of the most impressive waterfalls in the world—the Chamarel waterfall.

One thing is for sure: you will be able to get the *perfect* Instagram picture in Mauritius.

Tanzania

Tanzania, located in East Africa, has become a top vacation destination for many tourists recently due to its rich wildlife and unique culture.

Estimated Flight Fare (Roundtrip): $400-$1000.

Accommodation: $30-$100 per night.

Things to Do

Enjoy a magical day swimming with turtles at Baraka Natural Aquarium in the North of Zanzibar. During your visit, you can also feed the turtles with seaweed or just spend time enjoying the refreshing water.

If you’re feeling adventurous and searching for a thrilling experience, consider climbing the renowned mountain Kilimanjaro.

Tanzania also offers a variety of safaris. Enjoy a full-day guided tour at Mikumi National Park or go camping at Tarangire National Park. It’s up to you to decide how and where you want to see lions, elephants, leopards and giraffes!

affordable travel

When travelling, especially to unfamiliar destinations, prioritizing safety is crucial. Always research your destination thoroughly to understand local customs, laws, and areas to avoid. Keep your valuables secure, preferably in a hotel safe, and carry only essential items when exploring. Stay connected with friends or family, sharing your itinerary and checking in regularly. Use reputable transportation services and avoid travelling alone at night. Stay aware of your surroundings, and trust your instincts if something feels off. Lastly, ensure you have adequate travel insurance to cover any unexpected situations, from medical emergencies to trip cancellations. Safe travels!
